What is Ocean therapy?

Ocean therapy is the practice of using the sea’s natural elements  water, waves, salt, and sound  to restore balance, reduce stress, and support spiritual and emotional healing. Known as the “blue mind” effect, time spent by the ocean can calm the nervous system, inspire mindfulness, and encourage renewal.

Ocean Therapy

Why it helps & The Science Behind it

Ocean therapy (sometimes called blue-space therapy or surf therapy) is a wellness approach that uses the ocean and coastal environments to support mental, emotional, and sometimes physical health 🌊

  • Rhythmic waves calm the nervous system (similar to deep breathing)

  • Negative ions in ocean air may boost mood and energy

  • Reduced sensory overload compared to urban environments

  • Movement + nature combo releases endorphins and lowers cortisol

  • Awe & perspective: the vastness of the ocean can soften rumination and stress

Who it’s often used for

  • People dealing with stress, anxiety, depression

  • Trauma survivors and veterans (surf therapy is big here)

  • Burnout, grief, or major life transitions

  • Anyone who feels regulated by water or nature

Blue Space

Blue Space & Why water affects the brain

Here’s what’s happening under the hood (in human terms, not lab-speak):

  • Visual patterns: waves, ripples, reflections → gently hold attention without demanding it

  • Sound: rhythmic water sounds lower heart rate and breathing

  • Color: blues and aquas are linked to calm and safety

  • Movement: floating or swimming mimics soothing, repetitive motion

  • Perspective: big water = small worries (less rumination)

All of this shifts brain activity toward alpha and theta waves, which are associated with relaxation, creativity, and emotional regulation.

Benefits linked to Blue Mind

People in a Blue Mind state often report:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Improved mood and sleep

  • Better focus and creativity

  • A stronger sense of connection (to self, others, and nature)

This is why people get their best ideas in the shower or feel reset after a beach day.

How it connects to ocean therapy

Ocean therapy is a structured way to induce Blue Mind—using the sea as a tool.
Blue Mind is the mental state that results

How does ocean therapy work?

The core mechanisms

 Nervous system regulation

The ocean naturally shifts the body from sympathetic (fight/flight) to parasympathetic (rest/restore):

  • Wave rhythms slow breathing

  • Cold or cool water stimulates the vagus nerve

  • Horizon gazing reduces threat scanning

This is huge for anxiety, PTSD, burnout, and chronic stress.

Blue Mind state

  • Water induces calm alertness

  • Reduces rumination

  • Increases creativity and emotional openness

Ocean therapy intentionally creates and sustains this state.

Bilateral stimulation

Walking along the shore, paddling, swimming, or surfing creates left-right rhythmic movement, which:

  • Helps process emotions

  • Supports trauma integration (similar to EMDR principles)

Somatic healing

Ocean therapy works bottom-up (body → mind), not just top-down (talk → insight):

  • Feeling buoyancy

  • Sensing temperature and pressure

  • Reconnecting with physical boundaries

This is especially effective when talk therapy alone feels stuck.

Awe, humility, and connection

The ocean is vast, ancient, and alive. That triggers:

  • Reduced ego fixation

  • Greater sense of meaning

  • Emotional perspective (“my pain exists, but it’s not all of me”)

Awe is a legit psychological intervention now.

[acceptance* terms] I agree that surf conditions depend on the ocean and safety is our top priority.

    What other say about me!

Surfing with Herry was one of the first things I did when I moved to Bali. I still remember how this was a completely different experience than the other ones I had with surf coaches in Europe and Australia. Herry’s commitment and dedication to his job is outstanding. This guy surfs because he loves it and if you surf with him you end up loving it too!
Best part is that you find in him a great surf instructor but also a guide and a trustworthy person that is always up to give you surfing tips in and outside of the water.
Out of the surf instructors in Bali I strongly believe that Herry is the real deal! Thank you so much mate, you taught me a lot and see you in the line up !

My sister and I had two surfing lessions with Herry during our holidays in Bali and they were amazing. Herry quickly adapted the content of the lessions to our abilities and thanks to him we got to surf more waves than ever. We both felt very safe with him in the water and he was really good at sharing his knowledge about surfing.

I really enjoyed the time you taught me how to surf. We unfortunately don’t have a picture together, but you were very kind, welcoming and professional in the way you explained the surf basics. When I’m in Bali, I will definitely meet you again for a surf lesson!
